Training with positive reinforcement is a powerful tool for building trusting relationships and happy, relaxed horses. With clicker training, you can train anything from calm, safe ground manners to tricks to advanced riding work. Through a combination of lecture and hands-on practice with some of our fabulous rescue horses, this class will teach you the basics of the science behind clicker training and some of the groundwork skills that help create emotionally and physically balanced horses. It will also introduce you to some of the joyful relationships that can emerge from teaching horses with positive reinforcement!
No prior experience necessary. Each class will build on the skills and knowledge established in the prior weeks.
We strongly recommend that you plan on attending all classes.
Taylor is a lifelong horse person who believes that training is about building a trusting and joyful relationship based on refined two-way communication with our equine partners. She trains primarily with positive reinforcement (clicker training) and believes that good training requires keen attention to the horse’s overall physical and mental well-being. As such, she is always trying to learn more about equine ethology, the science of learning and behavior, biomechanics, hoof care, and many other factors that shape the quality of our horses’ lives. With a background in dressage, Taylor believes that we can train in ways that help horses feel better in their bodies, whether they are young horses learning to organize their growing limbs or retired horses maintaining balance and core strength. Taylor is honored to be a part of the team at 13 Hands, where she has volunteered and worked since 2021. In her time at the rescue, Taylor has used positive reinforcement training to teach young horses basic skills such as leading and hoof care, to socialize equines that have arrived with no prior handling experience, and to provide enrichment for senior horses. She also recently completed her PhD at the Graduate Center, CUNY, where her research focuses on the long-ignored histories of animal agency in theatre and performance.

Taylor’s course was an incredibly fun and rewarding learning experience that deepened and evolved my understanding of the human-horse connection. Ever since attending my first session, I’ve continually benefited from Taylor’s insightful approach, especially the ‘clicking moments’—those precise instances where I’m truly connecting with my horse. This awareness has transformed my interactions and strengthened our relationship in meaningful, lasting ways. Highly recommend for anyone looking to truly understand and enhance their bond with horses!

As a volunteer at 13 Hands Equine Rescue I became aware of the great work being done with Clicker Training. I watched over months as equines that were terrified to be close to humans became trusting enough to allow further work to be done. The possibilities of what can be done to help these equines become ready for a new life with human interaction is limitless. I took the Clicker Training class offered at 13 Hands which blends classroom learning with hands-on interaction with equines. This training also highlights all the fun and mentally stimulating activities you can do with your horse that doesn’t involve riding.
